a) Means of transport (Phương tiện đi lại)

About 40 years ago, most people in my neighbourhood travelled on foot or by bicycle. Only a few rich families owned a motorbike, and cars were very rare. People often walked to the market, to school and to work. Some farmers still went to their fields on horseback or by ox-cart. There were no motorways and the roads were narrow and muddy, so travelling long distances took a lot of time.

b) Home life (Đời sống gia đình)

Life at home was much simpler than it is today. Many houses did not have electricity, so people used oil lamps at night. There were very few electric devices — no refrigerators, no washing machines and no televisions in most homes. People cooked their meals over a wood or coal stove and stored food in a cupboard instead of a fridge. Families usually spent their evenings talking together or listening to the radio because there was little entertainment.

c) Community services (Dịch vụ cộng đồng)

Community services were quite limited at that time. Running water was not available in every house, so many families had to take water from a well or a public tap. Electricity came late and was often cut off. However, the neighbourhood had a small library and a communal house (nhà văn hoá) where people gathered for meetings and local festivals. Despite the hardships, neighbours knew one another well and often helped each other, so the community spirit was very strong.

Conclusion: Compared with today, life in my area 40 years ago was harder and less convenient, but people lived close to one another and valued their community.
