a) Situation 1 — A (a new resident) complains to B (an urban planner) about frequent traffic jams

A: Excuse me. I'm sorry to have to say this, but I'd like to make a complaint about the traffic in our area. Since I moved here, I've noticed that there are frequent traffic jams, especially during rush hour.

B: I'm so sorry to hear that. Could you tell me when the jams usually happen?

A: Well, it's really bad every morning from seven to nine, and again in the late afternoon. It sometimes takes me nearly an hour to travel just a few kilometres.

B: I quite understand how frustrating that must be. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

A: I do hope something can be done about it. The situation is getting worse every week.

B: I can assure you that we're aware of the problem. We're planning to widen the main roads and improve the public bus service to reduce the number of private vehicles. We'll do our best to sort it out as soon as possible.

A: That's good to hear. Thank you very much.

B: You're welcome. Thank you for your feedback.

b) Situation 2 — B complains to A (a local government official) about the city's overcrowded living conditions

A: … and that is why our city council is committed to improving people's quality of life. Are there any comments or questions?

B: Yes, thank you. I'm afraid I've got a complaint about the living conditions in our city. I'm not happy about how overcrowded it has become.

A: I'm sorry to hear that. Could you be more specific about the problem?

B: Of course. There are too many people living in small apartments, the parks are always packed, and it's very hard to find green space. Life here is becoming really stressful.

A: I quite understand your concern, and I'm so sorry about this situation. Overcrowding is indeed a serious issue in big cities.

B: So what is the council going to do about it?

A: I can assure you that we're taking action. We're building new residential areas in the suburbs and creating more public parks and green spaces. We'll do everything we can to make the city a better place to live.

B: I'm glad to hear that. Thank you for your response.

A: Thank you for raising this important issue.
