AN URBAN AREA — A model presentation (Phú Mỹ Hưng, Ho Chi Minh City)

Good morning, everyone. Our group would like to present our research on Phú Mỹ Hưng, a newly-created urban area in Ho Chi Minh City. We will answer four questions: where it is, what it was like in the past, how it has changed, and the positive and negative effects of its urbanisation.

a) Where is the place? (Nó ở đâu?)

Phú Mỹ Hưng is a modern urban area located in District 7, in the south of Ho Chi Minh City, about five kilometres from the city centre. It lies in the Nhà Bè low-lying area, next to the Sài Gòn River. It is now considered one of the most modern residential areas in Viet Nam.

b) What was it like in the past? (Trước kia nó như thế nào?)

In the past, before urbanisation started in the 1990s, this area was mostly swampland, marshes and rice fields. It was a poor, sparsely populated rural area with muddy roads, few houses and very little infrastructure. Transport was difficult, and there were almost no schools, hospitals or modern services.

c) How has it changed since urbanisation started? (Nó đã thay đổi thế nào kể từ khi đô thị hoá bắt đầu?)

Since urbanisation began, the area has changed dramatically. The swamps have been replaced by high-rise apartment buildings, offices, shopping centres and wide, clean streets. Modern infrastructure such as schools, international hospitals, parks, lakes and cycling paths has been built. The population has grown quickly, and many foreigners and well-off families have moved here. Today it is a green, well-planned urban area with a high standard of living.

d) What are the positive and negative effects of urbanisation? (Tác động tích cực và tiêu cực của đô thị hoá là gì?)

*Positive effects:*
- It has created many jobs and business opportunities for local people.
- Living standards and the quality of housing, healthcare and education have improved greatly.
- Modern facilities, green parks and better infrastructure make life more convenient and comfortable.

*Negative effects:*
- The cost of living and house prices have risen sharply, so low-income people can hardly afford to live there.
- Rapid building has increased traffic, air and noise pollution.
- Some original farmland and natural wetlands have been lost, affecting the local environment.

Conclusion (kết luận)

In conclusion, the urbanisation of Phú Mỹ Hưng has turned a poor swampland into a modern, prosperous urban area. It brings many benefits, but we should also manage its negative effects, especially pollution and rising living costs, to make urban development more sustainable. Thank you for listening. Are there any questions?
