Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions.

1. What can you see in each picture?

- a) *An old street in Ha Noi* (black-and-white): I can see an old street in the Old Quarter of Ha Noi with low, traditional houses and a tram (electric train) running along the street. There are few vehicles and people are walking or cycling.

b) *The way Hanoians got around* (black-and-white): I can see an old tram carrying passengers and local people travelling around the city. People got around mainly by tram, on foot or by bicycle. The streets look quiet and not crowded.

c) *A new image of Ha Noi* (colour): I can see a modern view of Ha Noi with a lake, green trees and tall, modern high-rise buildings. The city looks green, clean and developed.

d) *Transport in Ha Noi now* (colour): I can see busy, crowded traffic in Ha Noi today, with many cars and motorbikes, a flyover (overpass) and high-rise buildings in the background.

2. What do the pictures tell you about Ha Noi and people's life in the city?

The pictures show how much Ha Noi has changed over time — from the past (then) to the present (now). In the past, Ha Noi was a small, quiet city with old streets and simple means of transport such as trams and bicycles, and life was slow and peaceful. Nowadays, Ha Noi has become a large, modern and crowded city with many tall buildings, flyovers and heavy traffic. This shows that Ha Noi has developed and become more urbanised, and that people's life has become more modern, busier and more convenient, though the city is now more crowded and has more traffic.
